My current most successful workaround has been to reset ability and skill points prior to exiting the game, and doing literally anything else that'd force a savefile update (zoning most likely the surefire method). There's some mumbo jumbo in the log files about this when it happens, but that's 1+gb of logs i cba to go through. Palla and crafting items are exempt from this, but player stats and skills are reset. I've been having problems with this also due to every reload voiding changes made beyond the allowed ranges for player levels, stats etc. That's mostly because you're running a client through a local server.
