If you've got a perfect 6-lane one-way ↑↑↑↑↑↑, you could get through 6 TIMES as many vehicles.
and when the light turns green, you have 1 car passing through at a time. Obvious, right? If cars start to line up at a simple two-way street ↑↓, they can only line up 1-car wide. So what you want, to improve throughput, is to get those cars to spread out using as many lanes as possible at an intersection. You may think that making a 6-lane highway will ease congestion, but it just won't make any difference - since CIMs drive perfectly, and identically, once they're moving the cars never interact (one exception: merging can, under some circumstances, cause some backups as cars try and slot into an otherwise very busy and fast-moving lane) so the only time you really care about lanes is at intersections. That is: it does not matter at all how many lanes your road has, so long as the traffic is moving. The first thing to understand about traffic is this: when moving, you do NOT get congestion. And understanding the traffic AI is absolutely critical to analysing why an intersection is congested.
